WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is a highly relaxed state where the body is relaxed and the mind is alert and is receptive to suggestions. Everyone can be hypnotized except the severely mentally retarded. Exactly how hypnosis works is not clearly understood. Unfortunately, when most people think of hypnosis, they think of an individual in a zombie-like-state controlled by some master, or they remember an individual on a stage clucking like a chicken during a stage-hypnosis act. This is fiction, not fact.
In a state of hypnosis, people cannot be made to do anything against their will. Suggestions that you do not like will be rejected by your unconscious mind. You will find hypnosis relaxing, and you will remember everything that occurred. Hypnosis can be used for a variety of medical conditions; such as, acute and chronic pain, reduction of chemotherapy side-effects such as nausea, and improving the immune system. It is also used effectively to help patients with AIDS, lupus, asthma, TMJ, migraines, and other illnesses.
Hypnosis can improve the efficacy of psychotherapy and shorten the course of treatment. Hypnosis has been used effectively for anxiety and panic attacks, fears and phobias, depression, stress management, infertility, enhancement of sports performance, weight loss, and improvement of study and test taking. As you can see, hypnosis is helpful for a variety of medical conditions, clinical problems, and self-improvement.
